Finca GuilaI had a go at this (green) bowling when I was a teenager and it is more exciting than it looks! Obviously with a lot of retired people in the area, there are a fair few clubs around the region. This time I am covering the Marina Baja and Marina Alta areas.I have met a lot of these bowling types in my used to be role as a musician and have found them to be a really friendly bunch, without that pomposity sometimes found in other roundy ball sports (that shall be nameless.) So get yourself around to your local club, or visit one if you are on holiday. There are always social events and attached boozing rooms; some having restaurants and some offering racket sports. No, not professional football.

Albir Bowls Club has a website and is according to it, under new ownership. They offer squash as well for the not so cardiologically challenged. Albir is just to the east of Bendiorm, if you don’t know, so that’s one choice if you are on holiday there and there are buses if you don’t like driving. They have 8 rinks, three squash courts and a function room.

Also near Benidorm is the Finca Guila club, also offering tennis, bar and restaurant, situated in the nearby town of Alfaz del Pi, where I used to live! You get a location map download and a free first drink if you print out the coupon. Seem to want people to go there!

Benitachell BCBenitachell is a lovely little town between Teulada and Javea. It has a very friendly membership and quite a few come from the UK to bowl at the competitions, (probably like most). They have a bar, but no website that I can find, so you will have to contact their secretary, Pat Metcalfe on (0034)961722681 or Mob:(0034)645 393 969 or you can email on ecbcsec06@gmail.com

Further down the same road you come to Javea Green which can’t be missed on the right as you get near to Javea.(Inn on the Green). They have 9 rinks and a club house with snacks served during the day. (I should think so!)

Turning north and going inland a few miles, brings you to another lovely little town called Benidolieg. Apparently all these Beni prefixes mean “son of” so that’s how the names come about. Presumably there was only one family there to start with? I digress….The El Cid bar and restaurant is home to the bowling club and features a restaurant, bar, pool, tennis courts and a lot of very friendly people. Not far from here are also some caves worth having a look at.

Don’t forget your sun hat on the greens, as all the glare from the white attire and the shiny domes can get you (even the bowls themselves.)
